Birsa Munda and the Decolonization of Janjatiya Studies

Concept Note: The International seminar on 7-8 August 2025 at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, sponsored by ICSSR, titled Birsa Munda and the Decolonization of Janjatiya Studies, aims to reshape the narrative surrounding India’s Janjatiya (Adivasi) communities by focusing on the life, philosophy, and resistance of Birsa Munda. Celebrated as an iconic figure in India’s fight against colonial and feudal domination, Birsa Munda embodies the resilient spirit of Adivasi identity and self-assertion. His leadership in the Ulgulan (Great Rebellion) of 1899-1900 was not merely a political uprising but also a profound declaration of cultural autonomy, ecological values, and indigenous wisdom. This seminar endeavors to challenge the colonial, postcolonial, and mainstream perspectives that have frequently sidelined or oversimplified Janjatiya experiences. By delving into Birsa Munda’s legacy, it raises essential questions: How can we decolonize the historical and intellectual frameworks of Janjatiya studies? In what ways can Birsa’s vision inform modern efforts to advance Adivasi rights, land justice, and socio-cultural renewal? Bringing together insights from history, sociology, anthropology, literature, and translation studies, this interdisciplinary exchange underscores the urgency of elevating indigenous perspectives in both scholarly and public spheres. Key themes include land dispossession, cultural suppression, environmental equity, and the interplay between Janjatiya worldviews and contemporary life. A special focus will be placed on the role of translation in bridging Adivasi oral traditions and Birsa’s teachings to wider audiences, while critiquing the limitations of dominant languages in reflecting the depth of Janjatiya realities. The seminar ultimately positions Birsa Munda as a central figure in global conversations on decolonization, indigenous rights, and ecological sustainability, proposing new directions for academic research to resonate with the lived experiences and ambitions of India’s Janjatiya peoples. Through this effort, the seminar aspires to cultivate a more inclusive, reflective, and forward-looking approach to Janjatiya studies.

ICSSR के सहयोग से जवाहरलाल नेहरू विश्‍वविद्यालय, नई दिल्‍ली में 7-8 अगस्‍त 2025 को बिरसा मुंडा और जनजातीय अध्ययन का उपनिवेशमुक्तिकरण विषयक यह अंतरराष्‍ट्रीय सेमिनार भारत के जनजातीय (आदिवासी) समुदायों से जुड़े विमर्श को बिरसा मुंडा के जीवन, दर्शन और प्रतिरोध के केंद्र में रखकर नए सिरे से समझने का प्रयास करेगा। औपनिवेशिक और सामंती उत्पीड़न के खिलाफ भारत के संघर्ष में एक महान व्यक्तित्व के रूप में पहचाने जाने वाले बिरसा मुंडा, आदिवासी अभिव्यक्ति और पहचान के अडिग उत्साह का प्रतीक हैं। 1899-1900 के उलगुलान (महान विद्रोह) में उनकी अगुवाई न केवल एक राजनीतिक विद्रोह थी, बल्कि सांस्कृतिक संप्रभुता, पर्यावरणीय नैतिकता और स्वदेशी ज्ञान प्रणालियों की घोषणा भी थी। यह सेमिनार औपनिवेशिक, उत्तर-औपनिवेशिक और मुख्यधारा के ढांचों की पड़ताल करेगा, जो अक्सर जनजातीय कथाओं को हाशिए पर धकेलते या सरलीकृत करते हैं। बिरसा मुंडा की विरासत की जांच के माध्यम से, यह सेमिनार कुछ महत्वपूर्ण सवालों को संबोधित करना चाहता है, जैसे, हम जनजातीय अध्ययन के इतिहास और ज्ञान मीमांसा को कैसे औपनिवेशिकरण से मुक्त कर सकते हैं? बिरसा का दृष्टिकोण आदिवासी अधिकारों, भूमि राजनीति और सामाजिक-सांस्कृतिक पुनर्जनन के समकालीन दृष्टिकोणों को कैसे प्रेरित कर सकता है? आदि। यह अंतरविषयक संवाद इतिहास, समाजशास्त्र, मानवशास्त्र, साहित्य और अनुवाद अध्ययन से जुड़ेगा, जो शैक्षिक और सार्वजनिक विमर्शों में देशज आवाजों को बढ़ाने की आवश्यकता पर जोर देगा। चर्चाएं भूमि अलगाव, सांस्कृतिक विलोपन, पर्यावरणीय न्याय और जनजातीय विश्वदृष्टि और आधुनिकता के बीच संबंध जैसे विषयों पर केंद्रित होंगी। सेमिनार में अनुवाद की भूमिका पर विशेष ध्यान दिया जाएगा, जो आदिवासी मौखिक परंपराओं और बिरसा के विचारों को व्यापक दर्शकों तक पहुंचाने में मदद करता है, साथ ही प्रमुख भाषाओं की जनजातीय जीवन-जगत के सार को व्यक्त करने में असमर्थता पर सवाल उठाता है। अंततः, यह बिरसा मुंडा को औपनिवेशिकरण, स्वदेशी अधिकारों और पर्यावरणीय स्थिरता पर वैश्विक संवाद में एक केंद्रीय व्यक्तित्व के रूप में स्थापित करने का प्रयास करेगा, जो शैक्षिक विद्वता के लिए भारत के जनजातीय समुदायों की जीवंत वास्तविकताओं और आकांक्षाओं के साथ तालमेल बिठाने के रास्ते सुझाता है। इस पहल के माध्यम से, सेमिनार जनजातीय अध्ययन की एक समावेशी, चिंतनशील और परिवर्तनकारी समझ को बढ़ावा देने का लक्ष्य रखता है।
